about

"Mother Like You" was written and recorded in late April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. The end of the recording is serendipitously punctuated by a 7pm citywide clap for essential workers, so the song is an act of journalism. It is also a birthday gift for my mother, who was born on September 4th. All of the proceeds from this song will benefit The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ+ youth.

lyrics

I hope it's not wrong to say
Actually I thought of you
It's too complicated for
All these moods
Who possesses room?

I didn't know I was a voyeur
Until I looked out the window
And felt something missing
Like I was climbing a rope
'That's not desperate,' you said
We were naked in bed
Holding pain like an amethyst

'It's difficult to find meaning,' my mother says
It feels religious
But is anything these days
Bound by vows
I need
A mother like you
To take care of

When I went mad on the lawn
I exorcised magical thinking
Someone I worship encouraged it
Said, 'We need more of it'
But that's unmetabolized fodder
Plastic in the water
Image of a dead fish
Swimming freely
